Government has disbursed K500 million to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to settle outstanding payments to farmers who sold their maize to the Agency through various depots nationwide.
FRA Public Relations Coordinator, John Chipandwe, confirmed the transfer to Mafken News, stating that the funds have been sent to banks across the country for onward disbursement to eligible farmers.
Mr Chipandwe has urged the banks to expedite the payment process to ensure farmers are able to purchase necessary inputs ahead of the upcoming farming season.
He has revealed that despite the challenges posed by drought, FRA has successfully purchased over half a million metric tonnes of maize.
He expressed confidence that all farmers who deliver maize before the extended crop marketing season ends on November 30, 2024, will receive their payments in full.
Meanwhile, Copperbelt Province Socialist Party chairperson, Brian Chirambo, has called on government to ensure the timely delivery of farming inputs to combat food insecurity in the country.
In an interview with Mafken News, Mr. Chirambo stressed that prompt access to resources is essential for farmers, particularly with the planting season underway.
He warned that many communities are already grappling with food shortages, and without proper support, the situation could escalate.
