GOVERNMENT SADDENED BY CHISOKONE FIRE

Goods worth thousands of Kwacha at Chisokone’s Green Market in Kitwe District on the Copperbelt, have been reduced to ashes after fire swept through shops in the late hours of yesterday.
The fire is reported to have been ignited by an electrical fault.
Speaking in an interview with Mafken FM, Kitwe Mayor Mpasa Mwaya has sympathized with the traders while calling on governments support towards the affected traders.
And, some affected traders have stressed the need for government to come to their aid by facilitating the recovery of their investments which they depend on to meet their daily needs.
Meanwhile, Government says it is saddened by the devastating fire that swept through and caused significant damage to property at the market.
In a statement made available to Mafken FM radio today, Chief Government Spokesperson, Chushi Kasanda says the loss experienced by the marketeers also impacts their families and communities, stating that, government stands in solidarity with the affected traders during this challenging time.
She reveals that, Government, through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit –DMMU- and other government agencies, will assess the extent of the damage and provide the necessary interventions to support and assist the affected marketeers in rebuilding their businesses and lives.
Ms. Kasanda, who is also Minister of Information and Media says government, says will also work closely with market authorities to implement necessary safety measures to mitigate the risk of such incidents.
