Government has announced that it is currently sitting at eight hundred twenty thousand, six hundred seventy-six and thirty-four hundred metric tons of copper as at 31st December 2024, an increase of 12 percent from 2023 in its quest to achieve the 3 million metric tons of copper production.
Mines and Minerals Development Minister Paul Kabuswe says the increase in copper production can be attributed to many factors among them the resumption of production at Konkola and Mopani Copper Mines as well as the operationalization of various mines.
The minister however notes that this boost in output comes in the midst of difficult conditions owing to the challenges in the energy sector brought about by the drought. He is optimistic that production will be and could have been higher under different circumstances.
Addressing the Media, Mr. Kabuswe stressed that government will put a lot energy in resolving the problematic matter of illegal mining noting that illegal mining has various social and environmental consequences which must be eradicated.
