GOVERNMENT DISMISSES REPORTS SUGGESTING ZAMBIA HAS BEEN BLACKLISTED BY THE UNHRC

Government has rubbished some media reports suggesting that Zambia has been blacklisted by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for failing to uphold human rights standards from 2022 to 2024.

The reports further indicated that with this status quo at play, there are fears that there will be no signs of the record changing in 2025.

 

But Ministry of Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary for Internation Relation and Cooperation Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen has told a media briefing in Lusaka that such is not true but only a distortion of information.

Ms. Gundersen says it should be noted that membership to the UNHRC is through elections with a Member State seeking election by presenting its candidacy. 

 

She revealed the fact that Zambia has not sought election and is not on the list of members does not mean that it has been blacklisted but simply that the country has chosen not to seek membership during this period.
