Government Welcomes Con-court Ruling On ECL

Chief government spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa, has welcomed the decision by the courts to bar former republican president Edgar Lungu from contesting the 2026 and future elections.

Mr. Mweetwa has told a media briefing in Lusaka that government respects the decision as it has put to rest a heated National debate which he said has consumed national and international attention for the last three years 

 

He further stated that the judgement has brought clarity and certainty to the law because it ends long speculation by the general citizens.

He clarified that judgement is not about blocking the former head of state but was about the question of resolving the eligibility. 

 

He also emphasized that assertions that government had played a hand in the judgement have no merit and baseless.
