Mining Expert Urges Mandatory CSR

Written by on 29 November 2024

Mining expert Charles Mulila has called for the enforcement of mandatory Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Zambia’s mining sector, stressing that local communities in mining towns will continue to miss out on benefits as long as CSR remains voluntary.

Mulila explained that without a legal framework mandating CSR, mining companies are unlikely to prioritize development in surrounding communities.

He emphasized the need for swift implementation of the Mineral Regulations Bill, which would facilitate the diversification of CSR into Corporate Social Investment (CSI).

According to Mulila, mining companies have an obligation to contribute to the development of host communities, but this responsibility is not being met due to the lack of a constitutional law to hold them accountable.
