Governance and Development Advocates Zambia says the idea of term limits for elected leaders is a topic of significant debate which requires Government’s efforts to allow everyone to participate.

Executive Director Elias Mulenga says that the term limits for elected positions like members of Parliament and Councillors prevents monopoly of power and can prevent leaders from becoming too entrenched in their positions by reducing the risk of corruption and promoting democratic principles.

He tells Mafken News that term limits will increase Political Participation and encourage more people to run for Political office fostering a more dynamic and accountable representation.

Mr. Mulenga observed that the Constitution allows the President Term limit to two five-year terms, but there are no provisions for term limits for members of Parliament and Councillors which raises a big concern.

Mr. Mulenga said we have noticed that members of Parliament and Councillors defect from their Political parties upon the expiration of the president’s term of office to join other political parties and come back recycled to manipulate good Governance.
