Minister of Information and Media, Cornelius Mweetwa, has underscored government’s commitment to tackling constitutional gaps identified by President Hakainde Hichilema in his recent address to Parliament.

During the opening of Parliament on September 13, 2024, President Hichilema highlighted critical shortcomings in the current constitutional framework that could impact governance.

Mr Mweetwa, who is also the Chief Government Spokesperson, explained that these gaps, could hinder effective law application and responsiveness to citizens’ needs.

Speaking at a press briefing in Choma, he reassured that government is dedicated to reforming the constitution to strengthen democratic processes and support national development, aligning the framework with the aspirations of the Zambian people.

Meanwhile, Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) president Sean Tembo, accused President Hakainde Hichilema of using perceived gaps in the Zambian Constitution as an excuse to avoid the 2026 general elections.

Mr Tembo argues that Mr Hichilema’s statements about constitutional gaps suggest he is unprepared to participate in the upcoming polls and has no new promises for the Zambian people.
