Zambia has unveiled an ambitious plan to produce 1000 megawatts of solar energy, this year as part of its efforts to become a leader in renewable energy and sustainable mining practices amidst the power deficit.
The announcement was made by Minister of Energy Makozo Chikote, during the 12th Zambia International Mining and Energy Conference (ZIMEC) held in Kitwe.
Mr. Chikote described this target as a significant step towards reducing Zambia’s reliance on hydro power generation.
He believes that achieving this target will not only benefit the environment but also create jobs and stimulate economic growth.
Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe has also encouraged investors to take advantage of Zambia’s favorable business environment and invest in the renewable energy sector.
The conference, which drew over 400 attendees from 20 countries, highlighted Zambia’s commitment to promoting equitable investment partnerships, intra-regional mineral value chains, and renewable energy to catalyze sustainable economic growth.
