People’s Alliance for Change-PAC Leader Andyford Banda says the recent contamination of water resources on the Copperbelt province exposes the ongoing challenges of environmental pollution and lack of effective law enforcement.

Government has suspended operations at Sino Leach Metal Zambia limited company in Chambishi, Copperbelt Province, after it discharged acidic material into Mwembeshi River, which flows into the Kafue River, causing widespread pollution and damage to maize crops and aquatic life.

And Mr. Banda observes that this incidence is not the first of its kind as previous incidences have shown that weak government enforcement and political interference contribute mainly to these challenges.

The opposition leaders  alleges that most politicians are scared of investors hence failing to protect their own people who are at risk of health consequences, the environment and rivers which have been polluted on several occasions.

Mr. Banda says there is need for several measures to be undertaken to avert these occurrences such as supporting environmental conservation, strengthen environmental regulations and increasing transparency and accountability.
