Lusaka’s Chawama Residents Celebrate New Mortuary at Level One Hospital

Residents of Chawama Ward 2 are rejoicing over the construction of a new mortuary at Chawama Level One Hospital, a project spearheaded by the government.

The facility is set to alleviate the financial and logistical challenges faced by families transporting deceased individuals to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH).

 

John Kanyele, a local resident, expressed his gratitude for the new mortuary, noting its potential to ease the financial burden on families during difficult times. “This facility will provide much-needed relief, especially for families already dealing with the loss of a loved one,” he said.

 

Siziwa Nyirongo, another resident, emphasized the convenience and reduced travel time the new mortuary will offer. “It will save families time and energy that would otherwise be spent traveling long distances to UTH,” she added.

ZETOFA Constructions site manager, Jimmy Chidyaka, revealed that construction is 75% complete, with the facility expected to be ready by February 29, 2025.

 

Rodgers Chimena, Vice Chairperson of the Ward Development Committee, confirmed the project is valued at approximately 1 million Kwacha. 

 

Once completed, the mortuary will have a capacity to accommodate up to 25 bodies.

This new facility is a significant step forward for Chawama residents, providing much-needed support during times of grief.
