Zambia Takes Significant Strides in Promoting Human Rights

Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo has reaffirmed government’s commitment to upholding human rights and promoting a peaceful and inclusive environment.

Mr. Matambo made the commitment during a courtesy call from UN Rapporteur Irene Khan, who is currently on a country visit to assess Zambia’s progress in promoting freedom of opinion and expression.

 

Mr. Matambo acknowledged the previous regime’s checkered past, and numerous instances of excessive force led to fatalities. 

 

However, he emphasized the government’s dedication to addressing past human rights abuses and ensuring that such incidents never happen again.

And UN Rapporteur Irene Khan praised the Zambian government for inviting her to assess the country’s progress in promoting freedom of opinion and expression. 

 

Ms. Khan stated that, her visit aims to identify areas for improvement and provide recommendations to strengthen freedom of expression in Zambia.
