The Centre for Trade Policy and Development (CTPD) is advocating for prioritized rural energy access in Zambia.
A 2024 survey by the Ministry of Energy revealed that while- 53.6% of households have access to electricity nationwide, 34% of rural households have access to electricity, compared to 80.3% in urban areas.
Center Legal Researcher Lucy Musonda emphasizes that reliable energy access remains a significant challenge for rural communities, which rely heavily on unsustainable energy sources.
She adds that the energy sector must tackle obstacles inhibiting private sector investment and ensure PPAs prioritize rural areas.
Ms Musonda urged key stakeholders, including the Rural Electrification Authority, Energy Regulation Board, ZESCO, investors, and development partners to prioritize rural energy access.
