Emerald and Semi-Precious Stones Mining Association of Zambia – ESMAZ has called for the abolishment of the re-introduced 15 percent export tax on Gemstones.
Zambia has re-introduced a 15 percent export duty on Gemstones, through a statutory instrument dated 30th December, 2024, which came into effect on 1st January, 2025, revoking the 2019 suspension of a 15 percent export duty on precious Gemstones.
But Association President Victor Kalesha says the re-introduced tax rate of 21 percent which includes 15 percent export duty is unsustainable and will disadvantage investors and traders in the business.
Mr. Kalesha has since called on the government to consult with stakeholders in the mining sector and look for other ways of raising income in the mining sector especially in the exporting of gemstones without raising export taxes.
