Residents of Kawama West in Mufulira District on the Copperbelt Province, have raised concerns over the increasing theft of ZESCO cables in the area.
This comes after a suspected vandal was reportedly found lifeless while attempting to steal ZESCO transformer cables.
Josephine Mwansa, a resident, has called on government to establish a police post in the community to enhance security. She also highlighted the importance of creating job opportunities for young people to deter them from engaging in criminal activities.
Ward Development Committee (WDC) Chairperson Kelvin Meti emphasized the urgent need for a police post to safeguard the community.
Similarly, Albert Chileya, Executive Director of Young People for Positive Change, reaffirmed his organization’s commitment to providing information and support to help young people avoid destructive behavior.
In response, Mufulira Central Member of Parliament Golden Mwila assured residents that plans for constructing a police post are underway, with the WDC having already submitted the application.
He also urged residents to remain vigilant and monitor new arrivals in the community to help maintain safety.
