Police in Kitwe District have arrested two suspects in connection with the theft of two pigs, valued at K9,500, from a farm in the Misaka B farming block, Kamfinsa area.
Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer, Peacewell Mweemba, confirmed to Mafken News that the theft occurred between 21:00 hours on December 21st and 6:00 hours on December 22nd, 2024.
The suspects, identified as 29 year old Thomas Kaluba, and 30 year old Chibambo Bwalya, both of Sakanya, were apprehended after an ambush by farm workers.
Mr Mweemba explains that the farm’s caretaker and two workers had secured the piggery, which houses 58 pigs, by 21:00 on December 21st. The following morning, during the routine count of the pigs, two were found missing.
Upon further inspection, the caretaker discovered that the thieves had entered the piggery through an opening between the roof and the wall.
He reveals that the workers informed the farm owner and devised a plan. The next night, on December 23rd, around 03:00 hours, they spotted an intruder attempting to tie up a pig inside the piggery.
Upon seeing the workers, the suspect fled through the same gap in the wall. The workers chased him through the maize fields, eventually apprehending him and bringing him to Zamtan Police Post. A bicycle was also recovered from the suspect.
The Commanding Officer further reveals that during questioning, the suspect admitted to being involved in the theft and implicated another individual. The second suspect was arrested, and both are currently in police custody.
He explains that Police visited the crime scene and observed that the thieves used the wall to climb into the piggery, adding that the farm, located about 30 kilometers from Kitwe’s central business district, is not barricaded. Investigations are ongoing.
