Government has through the Food Reserve Agency FRA contracted 41 commercial farmers to help in the production of early maize amid the uncertainty of weather patterns.

Addressing the media, Information and Media Minister Cornelius Mweetwa says the farmers are expected to start supplying the maize to FRA by March 2024.
Mr. Mweetwa says the defence forces have also been tasked to step up the production of food in the northern corridor of the country by means of irrigation because that region has water bodies with favourable soils.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mweetwa has revealed that the country has enough maize stocks to last the country for the next six months or so as the FRA is currently sitting on 750 thousand metric tons of Maize.
The minister has assured that with these maize stocks, the country is 6 months food secure notwithstanding the production of early maize expected to be produced by commercial farmers.
