Kwacha Constituency Member of Parliament Charles Mulenga has bemoaned the accommodation crises at Kitwe’s Copperbelt University CBU saying it has reached alarming levels.
Mr. Mulenga notes that majority students are being accommodated outside the university posing a high risk of them being attacked by thugs as they walk back to their boarding houses as well as road traffic accidents among other risks.
Speaking in parliament when he questioned Education Minister over the delay in completion of the CBU hostels, Mr. Mulenga stated that there is need to expedite the construction of hostels at the University to avoid loss of these young lives.
And in his response, Education Minister Douglous Syakalima stated that the construction of Copperbelt university hostels is planned for completion within the 2025/2027 medium term budget frame work.
However, the engineer’s assessment estimates a completion period of 24 months continued upon the availability of funds. He says the works are expected to resume in 2025.
The Minister says the delay in completing the project is attributed to financial constraints during the project implementation.
Mr. Syakalima adds that lot one out of the 5 earmarked for construction is just pending contract signing and is estimated at 123 million, 596 thousand 62 kwacha, and 56 ngwee.
