The National Action for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ) has criticized the recent K500 salary increment for teachers, describing it as a mockery and insufficient given the current economic challenges.

In an interview with Mafken News, NAQEZ Executive Director Aaron Chansa expressed his disappointment over the increase, which will take effect in January 2025.

He emphasized that any discussion of quality education must include teacher welfare, noting that the proposed increment does not align with the rising cost of living.

Dr. Chansa also took issue with those defending the increment, stating that they are well aware of the disconnect between teacher’s salaries and the economic realities faced by those in the education sector.

He argued that the K500 increment does not make “economic sense” and fails to address the pressing needs of educators.
