A mental health Activist Francis Chipalo has called on Government to ensure that men’s mental health is given priority owing to the fact that issues affecting men and the boy child are rarely given much attention.
Mr. Chipalo notes that statistically, reports indicate that more males have committed suicide in the recent past compared to females, an indication that there is need to urgently invest in men’s mental health.
He has bemoaned that most successful government’s support to the girl child and women whilst neglecting males.
Mr. Chipalo tells Mafken News that while he appreciates the fact that females are arguably most vulnerable compared to males in society, there is need to strike a balance between the two so that no gaps are created.
Meanwhile, Mr. Chipalo is however encouraged to note that Zambia is among countries on the African continent pushing for a recognition of International Men’s Day which falls on November 19 with 13 African states currently on board.
And Zambia Men’s Network for Gender and Development ZMNGD says the push for the recognition of International Men’s Day across Africa is gaining momentum, with five more countries joining the campaign, bringing the total number of participating nations to 13.
ZMNGD coordinator Nelson Banda tells Mafken that the campaign initially launched last year with support from eight countries including Zambia, Kenya, and Tunisia, aims to raise awareness on men’s health, well-being, and their role in promoting gender equality.
Mr Banda explains that as part of the effort, the African nations involved are advocating for the recognition of the day by their governments and will present a Call to Action Statement to the African Union.
