The government has challenged Environmental Health Practitioners to play a significant role in promoting food safety across the country.
Local Government Minister Garry Nkombo, represented by Permanent Secretary Maambo Hamaundu at the Zambia Institute of Environmental Health Annual General Meeting in Lusaka, urged practitioners to ensure that food available to the public is safe for consumption.
Mr. Nkombo noted that as experts in food inspection and safety, Environmental Health Practitioners must take the lead in preventing food poisoning to help maintain a healthy population.
He further emphasized the importance of enforcing the Food Safety Act No. 7 of 2019 with steadfast commitment, especially in light of the challenges posed by street vending.
Lusaka Mayor Chilando Chitangala, speaking at the same event, reaffirmed her office’s commitment to working with Environmental Health Practitioners to enforce public health laws.
Meanwhile, Zambia Institute of Environmental Health (ZIEH) President Dr. Titus Hankonde expressed optimism that the decentralization policy will enhance service delivery within the health system
