Mweetwa Cautions UPND Members Against Commenting On The Catholics Bishops Pastoral Letter

Information and Media Minister Cornelius Mweetwa has cautioned government officials and United Party for National Development (UPND) members to avoid commenting on the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) pastoral letter.

ZCCB has issued a comprehensive Pastoral Statement emphasizing the critical importance of preserving Zambia’s multi-party and democratic identity. The statement addresses crucial political, economic, moral, and social concerns affecting the country.

 

But Mr. Mweetwa who is also Chief Government Spokesperson says Government has taken note of the pastoral letter, concerns and allegations raised and will respond at an appropriate time.

Speaking when he and other government officials visited Super Pit expansion project at Bariick Lumwana Mine, Mr. Mwetwa says government notes that the church is an all-weather partner of government adding that consultations with the Catholic Church will be done.

 

Meanwhile, The United Kwacha Alliance, UKA agrees with the pastoral letter by the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops, ZCCB which it says raises grave concerns regarding the state of governance, democratic freedoms, judicial independence, and the unwarranted attacks on the Catholic Church.

UKA Chairperson Communications Jackson Silavwe has commended the ZCCB for its courageous stance in addressing these critical issues, which resonate with the cries of many Zambians.

 

Mr. Silavwe has since called on the government to immediately halt all forms of interference in Church activities stating that religious institutions must remain sanctuaries of peace, prayer, and guidance, free from political intimidation or harassment.
