The Small-Scale Miners Association of Zambia has urged government to prioritize the safety of small-scale miners to prevent accidents in the mining sector.
In an interview with Mafken News in Kitwe, Acting Association President Kelvin Tembo emphasized the need for a thorough assessment of dumpsites across the country. He noted that ensuring the safety of these sites is crucial, rather than allowing operations for political gains.
Mr Tembo expressed concern over the increasing number of mining accidents, especially those involving young people, describing the trend as “disheartening.”
This follows the tragic incident on Saturday, September 21, 2024, where five suspected illegal miners died after being trapped at Green Mountain TD52 mine in Kitwe, while two others were rescued and taken to Kalulushi General Hospital for treatment.
