The United Mines Workers Union of Zambia – UMUZ has welcomed the announcement by President Hakainde Hichilema that government is seeking to ensure that all mines in the country become operational.

UMUZ President Wisdom Ngwira says this move should be supported by all Zambians because it is key to unlocking the country’s economy.

Mr. Ngwira says some Mines have been non-operational for many years resulting in the drop of copper production and employment levels.

He adds that opening up all mines across the country will also support small and medium businesses especially those in mining towns.

On Friday 13th September, 2023 President Hakainde Hichilema announced that his government will ensure that all mines become operational in order for the country to meet its targeted 3 million metric tonnes of copper production by 2031.
