A U.S.-based well-wisher has paid the K4, 000 fine for 21-year-old Mercy Mwakesa, saving her from a six-month jail term.
Mwakesa was convicted by the Mufulira Magistrate Court for producing and sharing pornographic content on social media between May 1st and May 14th, 2024. Unable to afford the fine, she had prepared to serve her sentence.
The well-wisher, upon learning that Mwakesa is still in school, decided to help. He emphasized the need for educating youths on online safety and cyber laws.
In an exclusive interview, Mwakesa reflected on her ordeal, acknowledging that she had made poor choices.
She explained that much of what was said about her situation was inaccurate, and her family could not afford the fine, which is why she initially decided to serve the jail term.
Expressing gratitude to the well-wisher, she stated that her focus would now be on her education, which she feared might have come to an abrupt end.
Mwakesa has also appealed to the public and her family for forgiveness, urging her peers to avoid such vices.
Her father Reagan Mwakesa also thanked the well-wisher for the support.
Meanwhile, community activist Geoffrey Luchele highlighted the need for a rehabilitation-focused approach for young offenders, rather than punitive measures.
Mr Luchele emphasized that rehabilitation efforts are crucial for first-time offenders, as failing to address their issues could result in them becoming a burden on society.
He urged NGOs and churches to take an active role in addressing such challenges and supporting youth rehabilitation.
