Sweden Pledges Over $8.5 Million to Support Zambia in Climate Change Efforts

The Swedish government has pledged more than $8.5 million to help Zambia address climate change and support vulnerable communities.
During a courtesy call on the Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Mike Mposha, Swedish Ambassador Johan Hallenborg announced that $5.5 million will be allocated through the UN Central Emergency Response Fund to combat drought in Zambia.
Additionally, Ambassador Hallenborg revealed that $2 million will be directed towards Zambia’s Social Cash Transfer SCT program to assist the country’s most vulnerable citizens.
Another $1 million has been donated to the World Food Programme to support drought relief efforts in affected areas.
Meanwhile, Mr Mposha expressed gratitude for the support and outlined government’s commitment to developing climate-resilient infrastructure, enhancing disaster preparedness, and promoting climate-smart agriculture.
He emphasized that the Ministry’s vision is to ensure economic growth aligns with environmental sustainability, aiming for a future where Zambian children inherit a prosperous and sustainable country.
The Minister also highlighted the strong bilateral relationship between Zambia and Sweden, noting initiatives such as the Sweden-Zambia Development Cooperation Agreement, the Zambia-Sweden Trade and Investment Agreement, and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency programs.
He praised the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Carbon Market cooperation under the Paris Agreement as evidence of the deepening ties between the two nations.
