Some marketeers in Lusaka have welcomed the Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA) standardized Medas.

This follows a recent announcement by ZMA Executive Director Humphrey Nkobeni that the agency has successfully launched the Meda Project, with a pilot phase conducted at Chilenje Market, Soweto, and other key markets across the country.

However, most traders at City Market expressed ignorance about the standardized Medas, stating that they believed the Medas were specifically intended for use at Soweto Market.

Some traders expressed a desire to have standardized Medas but requested that the agency provide them at no cost.

Ms. Esnart Mofya, a trader at City Market, noted that although the Medas are transparent, it wouldn’t prevent some unscrupulous traders from packing underweight products.

She further demonstrated how peanut butter is packed in transparent containers but is smeared around the entire container to deceive customers into thinking the package is full.

ZMA will soon roll out a nationwide Meda Project that will provide standardized Medas to about 30,000 marketeers to support fair trade, market transparency, and agricultural development by standardizing the measurement of dry products
