GPZ Leader Accuses Government of Undermining Digital Freedoms

Golden Party of Zambia (GPZ) Leader Jackson Silavwe has accused the New Dawn administration of planning to amend the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act of 2021 under the pretext of enhancing digital protection for private citizens.
In a statement to Mafken News, Mr Silavwe condemned the proposed changes as an attempt to suppress social media criticism and stifle public discourse on national issues. He argued that while misuse of social media is a concern, any new laws should align with Zambia’s status as a constitutional democracy.
He called on President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND government to focus on pressing national concerns, including economic reform, the rule of law, reducing the cost of living, and addressing the ongoing power deficit impacting businesses and citizens.
He also urged the church, civil society, the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ), and traditional leaders to continue advocating against what he described as human rights abuses and to remain resilient in their efforts to uphold fundamental freedoms.
